Crown Lengthening

Some people have what is often referred to as a “gummy smile.” That is, when they smile, a large amount of gum tissue is shown above their upper teeth. There are typically three causes of a gummy smile; 1) teeth have not erupted all the way, 2) gum overgrowth of caused by certain medications or bacteria, or 3) skeletal excess (long upper jaw). Often this condition can be treated by a relatively simple, non-invasive procedure called crown lengthening in which excess gum tissue is removed.

Gingival Grafting

Gum recession is a common problem and often results from aggressive tooth brushing. Gum recession leads to several potential problems including sensitive teeth, root cavities, difficulty maintaining hygiene and esthetic concerns.  Depending on the extent and location of recession, your dentist may advise you to fix the defect. Correction of gum recession is typically accomplished by gingival grafting where a small amount of donor tissue is grafted over the defect. Dr. Burke has several techniques for accomplishing this in a minimally invasive way.
